Herpes Simplex Virus 1 & 2 are two strains of herpes viruses that cause infections in humans. HSV-1 and HSV-2 is transmitted through sexual contact. After the initial infection, the virus may lay dormant in the cell bodies of nerves where it can be reactivated, leading to the chronic nature of herpes infections. Symptoms caused by the HSV-1 and HSV-2 virus include painful, watery blisters resembling chickenpox, in the skin and mucous membranes such as the mouth or lips, or on the genitals.
