Human Cytomegalovirus causes mild or asymptomatic infections in most healthy individuals. It is spread from person to person via bodily fluids. HCMV, when transmitted from the mother to the fetus, can cause problmes with hearing, vision, and neurological development in newborns. HCMV also causes problems in individuals with a weakened immune system such as liver failure.
